Industry ‘report Card Shows Apple Podcasts Extend Its Lead As Top Overall Platform

A recent industry report card revealed that Apple Podcasts continues to be the most popular podcast platform for creators. The poll was conducted by the staff at PodNews , and the results are based on responses from "135 different podcast creators."

This report details "how podcast creators and listeners feel about the podcast platforms they use." Results are divided into categories including applications, catalogs, analytics and insights, monetization, innovation, value, and manufacturer relations.

The final "Overall" category, which asks podcast publishers about their "overall experience" with these services, shows Apple's success this year (5 points);

  1. Apple Podcasts: 3.6 (from 3.2)
  2. Spotify: 3.2 (from 3.0)
  3. YouTube: 2.7
  4. Amazon Music: 2.5
  5. Google Podcasts: 2.0 (down from 2.6)

In fact, Apple Podcasts took first place in almost every category, only beating out Spotify in the "Catalog" and "New" categories. Even in these categories, Spotify managed to have a very slight edge over Apple Podcasts.

Some quotes from podcasters about how Apple has upped its game over the past year:

  • "Apple Podcasts is surprisingly useful and affordable, even for medium-sized shows."
  • “Apple really put a lot of money into this. They always suck. Credit to them.
  • "Apple was the only one who wrote to me after waiting a few days."
  • "Apple Podcasts is the only company where I can connect with people."
  • "Apple does a good job of showing up, providing information and being open."

Podnews puts it this way:

So, in general. Apple manufacturers have significantly improved their ratings, while Spotify has also improved its rating. Google Podcasts, like everywhere else, is showing a disappointing drop in rankings. But YouTube is already in a tough position against Apple and Spotify, even though nothing has launched yet.

We're happy to see improvements from both Apple and Spotify. But the goal is also to help the industry continue to focus on the best tools for creators and audiences.
