Avatar Visual Effects Supervisor Rushes To Hospital For Surgery Right After Oscars 2023 Win: Reports

The One Avatar: The Path of Water visual effects artist got a taste of the 2023 Oscars when he left the show for surgery shortly after the film won best visual effects.

Several media outlets reported on Monday that Eric Sandon, the film's senior visual effects supervisor, left the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles and went into surgery Sunday night after his team won an Oscar.

"Avatar. A representative for Weta FX, the visual effects company behind The Way of Water, told IndieWire on Monday that Sindon, 53, was in "severe pain" all day Sunday and was taken at the Beverly Hills Hospital .California show.

Sindon decided to attend the Oscars despite being administered painkillers and testing negative for appendicitis and kidney stones, but felt even more pain after Avatar won the lone team award at the 95th Academy Awards, reports IndieWire.

Weta FX did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Tuesday.

Sindon left the awards ceremony during a backstage interview in the press room and returned to the hospital, where doctors performed surgery to repair a ruptured small intestine, the visual effects company told IndieWire.

“He's fine and getting better as we speak. I'm glad he's gone now that he's gone,” a Weta rep told FX Entertainment Tonight on Monday night. "Something extremely serious."

Saindon's mother, Leela Saindon, told the NBC News Center on Monday that her son had been transferred to intensive care after surgery.

He added that he will not be able to return to his home in New Zealand for about a month.

On Sunday, the artist "Avatar. " Waterway" became his first "Oscar" in his career.

According to IndieWire, Saindan worked on director James Cameron's Avatar in 2009 and was promoted to senior visual effects supervisor during production on the 2022 sequel.

The film's award for Best Visual Effects was officially presented to Sandon and fellow VFX team members Joe Letter, Richard Baynham and Daniel Barrett.

"Avatar. Waterway" was nominated for a total of four awards at Sunday's ceremony, but "Everything Everywhere, All At Once and All Quiet on the Western Front" dominated the night with seven and four wins respectively, taking the only victory.
