What makes an action movie great? Action scenes, of course. Whether it's a big machine spinning out of control in urban space, fighter jets hurtling through the clouds on a secret mission, or giant monsters attacking just about anything they want, these scenarios grab our attention and make us want to see more.
The cinematography and visuals are a big part of what makes action movies exciting, but the soundtrack adds just as much to the experience. Well-equipped theaters, especially IMAX theaters, bring movies to life, creating a level of 3D immersion that makes even the best 4K TV speakers sound like toys.
TVs with better sound improve this situation, but to get cinematic sound, you need to add one of the best Dolby Atmos soundtracks to your TV. There are plenty of options to choose from depending on your viewing space and budget, and flagship soundbars such as Sonos Arc and Devialet Dione have spectacular top surface drivers that send aerial effects to Atmos tracks from the room ceiling. her. better to spread out.
Some models, like the Sonos Arc, can be upgraded with additional subwoofers and surround speakers to create a full Dolby Atmos 5.1.2 speaker system (and 7.1.4 when using the new Sonos Era 300 for surround sound). Others, like the JBL Bar 1300X and Samsung HW-Q990B, come with surround speakers and subwoofers, and feature 11.1.4-channel Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio, but at a price. higher.
But back to the fighters. I've used these six options frequently to test Dolby Atmos soundbars and speakers over the years. Each features a particularly immersive Dolby Atmos soundtrack (except Tenet , which has DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 tracks), as well as powerful low-frequency effects. In short, they'll let you know what a Dolby Atmos soundbar is capable of and, as a bonus, they're all fun to watch in their own way.
I have these movies on a 4K Blu-ray disc - yes discs are still a viable way to watch movies if you have one of the best 4K Blu-ray players - but you can also find them on the best services streaming or for digital purchase or online rental.
1. John Wick 3 - Parabellum (2019)
The arrival of John Wick: Chapter 4 in theaters this weekend was the inspiration for this post. John Wick 3 - Parabellum features a stunning live score from Atmos that greatly highlights the film's elaborate set design.
It's not for the faint of heart - there are plenty of fight scenes, some of them brutally brutal. But if that's okay with you, the accompanying scenes, like the one in the antique store where Vic meets the first of many would-be assassins, or the one in the town stable where Vic holds the horses to help him s 'escape. with very dynamic sound effects. And then there's the incessant rain, made entirely believable thanks to a good soundtrack in Dolby Atmos.
I could go on and on about all the heart-pounding action from John Wick 3 , but I have to go to my local IMAX theater to see John Wick: Chapter 4 . In the meantime, check out our guide on how to watch the John Wick movies in order and where to stream them.
2 Top Gun: Mavericks (2022)
Top Gun: Maverick won the Best Sound Oscar at the recent Oscars, and the trophy was well deserved.
Right off the bat, TG2 draws you into a whirlwind of sounds, from the 80s-inspired soundtrack to the effects accompanying the airy antics of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell and his bands. Many of the film's missions are all examples of its immersive sound, but the jaw-dropping scene is when the Super Hornets descend into the canyon, then take off and take off.
3. 1917 (2019)
1917 is another audio Oscar winner, this time for Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, and legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins also won Best Achievement in Cinematography. The third prize for best achievement in visual effects made the 2020 Oscars a technical victory of 1917 . It goes without saying that when you sit down to watch this movie, you know you're in for an audiovisual treat.
The Atmos sound mix here is very detailed and perfectly captures the claustrophobic aspects of war as soldiers are trapped in trenches with a hail of gunfire raining down on them, as well as the more scenic aspects as they emerge. and observe the devastated landscape. With a good Atmos soundbar, high-flying support fighters literally fly right up to the ceiling of your room. And in another scene where British soldiers are trapped in an underground bunker as debris falls on them, the sound mix might sound a little too realistic.
4. A Quiet Place (2018)
The first film, A Quiet Place, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Sound Editing, which is pretty amazing considering its soundtrack is mostly silence. Anyone who's seen the movie knows why: blind aliens with hypersensitive hearing have invaded Earth, and any noise made by survivors in this post-apocalyptic world means almost certain death.
Given the film's long silence and whispered dialogue, when someone accidentally makes noise, it happens, doesn't it? - especially unsettling seems the fast and furious reaction of huge screaming aliens. These quiet passages make you pay more attention to the sound, and the A Quiet Place soundtrack does a great job of creating a spooky world.
5. Principle (2020)
My Tenet 4K Blu-ray disc doesn't have a Dolby Atmos audio track, but the audio mix presented on its DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is so maximalist that I never seem to watch it. Like many films directed by Christopher Nolan, the music, dialogue and barrage of sound effects roll by at a rapid pace that never stops, leaving you almost mesmerized.
That's not to say Tenet isn't good, but you'll definitely want to watch it more than once to follow the story - the main reason I've got it on disc. There are some great action tapes that use the surround channels very heavily and the low frequency effects are fully on. Given how much is going on by ear, dialogue in Tenet is somewhat drowned out in the mix, and making adjustments with the soundbar controls to boost vocals would definitely be a plus for first-timers.
6. Godzilla (2014)
Okay, to say this 2014 remake of Godzilla is a great movie would be an understatement, but it's definitely a showcase for Dolby Atmos sound. It's the main reason Godzilla was remastered at Atmos for 4K Blu-ray release, and its creators clearly set out to make it a template for immersive audio.
The soundtrack often puts you in the path of giant creatures destroying decommissioned nuclear power plants and other facilities, but the sequence in which Godzilla and his nemesis MUTO battle in downtown Honolulu is particularly hyped. Helicopters often circle overhead and there are numerous scenes where rockets are fired at the animals as they gradually move towards San Francisco to continue the mayhem. Go Godzilla .
