Puss In Boots: The Last Wish Is So Good That Shrek Should Be A Supporting Character In The Next Movie

When I came to the theater with my five-year-old daughter to see Puss in Boots: Last Wish , the bar lived up to my expectations. Sure, I've heard that the original Puss in Boots was a solid adventure, but why did I, someone who grew up in the Shrek era, think that a supporting character like Puss deserved a standalone movie, let alone a sequel. ? ? My daughter loves cats so we went, and boy am I glad.

Let me add my voice to those I've heard online: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is amazing. The reviews are well deserved and I'm all for a third film with the character. Also, I think if Shrek comes back into the franchise, he should play second fiddle to Puss. It's a bold approach, I know, but one that can only be explained by someone who has seen the last film. Of course, we do introduce spoilers here, so keep that in mind before continuing!

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish sets up the wonderful sequel to Puss

If you remember Puss In Boots from the movie Shrek , you might think of him as boring or arrogant. That's what Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is all about, and how the character's world is turned upside down when he learns that he's at the end of his nine lives. Without spoiling the entire plot for those interested, it becomes a story of Puss' quest for more life and a complete transformation of the character.

Before seeing this movie, I would say that Puss in Boots had as much character as Shrek or Pinocchio from The Gingerbread Man. He is a fun character, single voiced by the talented Antonio Banderas. After Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the character is heading in a new direction, and it's safe to say that his journey isn't over yet.

To abandon this journey just to see Shrek, Fiona and Donkey take center stage would be to miss out on a huge character arc. Shrek has had four films to develop, and honestly, he's grown a lot since his first adventure. I have a hard time believing that anything we see with Shrek at this point could be as interesting a narrative as what's on the horizon with Puss, so it'll just have to be the main character.

Pussi has good companions

The Shrek franchise has always been full of memorable asides and minor characters. I have already mentioned some of the players who support the green bay the most and there are others that can be mentioned together. Like I said, a lot of these characters are fun because of their limited roles, but they don't have much depth. No one fits the characters presented in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and I'll say that to their chests.

Kitty Softpaws and Perrito are cute friends who need it right away, so it's good to see that they'll likely be around for the next episode. Kitty has a complicated history with Boots from The Last Wish , and Perito is the classic goofball of all children's cartoons, but he's also incredibly sweet.

Like Puss, Softpaw and Perito also have quite a ride in this movie. If you watch it, I promise you'll end up as invested as I am. Part of this is because so much of The Last Wish is about growing up and changing, which is a message that clearly resonates with adults and children alike.

Puss' story is in a better place than Shrek

There's no denying that the Shrek franchise is still celebrated in pop culture today, with multiple generations growing up watching the films. Even if you ask who is the most popular character between Shrek and Puss in Boots after The Last Wish , the answer will be Shrek. That said, it's been a while since we've seen a Shrek movie, and the latest episode was anything but ordinary.

How Antonio Banderas' Heart Attack Affected Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Antonio Banderas talks about the heart attack that changed his life.

While I don't always put much stock in the overall Rotten Tomatoes scores, Shrek Forever is pretty awesome after being certified Rotten by critics and audiences . As someone who has seen the film, I can say that it lacks a lot of what made the previous films so great. However, I'm sure every movie has its fans and there are probably more than a few who have their own arguments as to why the movie was better and why Shrek 5 should take precedence over Puss In Boots 3 .

I'll answer in the words of Shrek Forever After screenwriter Josh Klausner, who explained to Storyling in 2010 why Shrek 5 never happened. Klausner explained that about a year into the development of the fourth film, animation legend and franchise executive Jeffrey Katzenberg told him that the fourth film brought Shrek's story to a happy ending. Maybe that's why the fifth movie never happened and then work went to Gata Bota .

Of course, we've since learned that there was an attempt to make a Shrek 5 , but nothing came of it. It's kind of crazy, since Eddie Murphy was on board to return as Donkey, and at one point a Shrek 5 script was finished.

Puss in Boots also had a long gap between the original film and the sequel, but here we are in 2023, and Last Wish is beautiful . The introduction of Shrek as a supporting character in Part 3 of the Puss in the Boots film series will be enough to bring people back to the cinema if they missed the previous two films. It's imperative, both for the continued success of Puss in Boots and whatever happens with the Shrek franchise, that these writers stay on track instead of trying to impress the world with Shrek 5 without putting the character along with Puss to rediscover it.

Those who saw Puss in Boots: The Last Wish probably know I'm right, but the rest of you will need to see it in theaters or on demand to fully adjust. Watch it now and see why so many people are talking about this great movie.
