‘Avatar: The Way Of Water Becomes Fourth Biggest Movie Of All Time, Surpasses ‘The Force Awakens

The Oscar-nominated sci-fi film " Avatar: Waterway " marked another box office milestone this weekend. It officially became the fourth highest grossing film, surpassing "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens".

20th Century Studios announced the news the following week, along with the rest of the film, no. 1 box office open for 7 consecutive weekends.

As previously reported by The Blast , James Cameron's film franchise recently became the sixth film to surpass the $2 billion mark at the global box office. The film has now earned $2.117 billion at the worldwide box office, surpassing Disney and Lucasfilm's "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens," which has now earned $2.071 billion.

On Box Office Mojo this weekend, "Waterway" earned an additional $15.9 billion at the domestic box office. That brought the film's domestic total to $620.8 million, making it the 11th highest-grossing US box office, and counting.

"Waterway" is expected to overtake the 2012 Disney and Marvel film "The Avengers" with $623 million to enter the top 10. Next is number 9, with "Jurassic World" at number 653 million and Cameron's "Titanic" at number 8 with $659. million. It seems likely that "Waterway" will outsell the two films before hitting the national charts. The end of the race.

Cameron now has three of the top five films in the world ranking with "Avatar", "Titanic" and "Avatar: Waterway". It also seems inevitable that 'Waterway' will overtake 'Titanic' in the overall world rankings and eventually become the third biggest movie. This could bode well for the future of the franchise.

During the financial awards, "Waterway" received several Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound and Best Production Design. The first "Avatar" was nominated for nine Oscars, including best picture and best director. It ended up winning three for Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction.

The new sequel takes place ten years after the events of the first film. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) want to protect their family. Taking refuge with the Na'vi, a tribe from the Metkayina Ridge, they fight to survive and escape the return of Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang).

Cameron directed the sequel from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Sigourney Weaver and Kate Winslet also star.

The next "Avatar" series will be released in theaters on December 20, 2024. After that, the fourth film is scheduled to release on December 18, 2026. The fifth installment in the franchise is also in the works and is expected to be released in December. 2028.

Elsewhere at the box office, "Puss in Boots" had another strong weekend last week, falling just 11% to rake in another $10.4 million. The national total was set at $140.7 million. The film should easily surpass the original domestic total of 2011's "Puss in Boots" by two weeks, if not more. The film grossed over $335 million worldwide.

M. Night Shyamalan's "Avatar: The Way of Water" looks like the best chance to dethrone it at the box office when it opens this weekend. Shyamalan's latest film, "Old," opened in 2021 with $16.8 million. "Klop at the cabin" also seems to be getting a lot of positive press for Dave Bautista's performance. The movie hits theaters on February 3.

"Avatar: Waterway" is still playing.
