James Cameron's behemoth "Avatar: Waterway" won the feature competition at the 21st Visual Effects Society Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Wednesday night.
Its nine wins include one in the top category for Outstanding Visual Effects in Photorealistic Features. The film won trophies for character animation (Kiri, played by Sigourney Weaver), practical effects (for real cars and wave pool), composition and lighting (water fusion), simulation effects (water), models (sea dragon). , environments (trapping) and imaginative cinematography. In addition, the hydraulic tool kit received the new VES award for new technology. The film entered the night with 14 nominations (it received several nominations in various categories).
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio was the big winner in an animated feature, winning three awards, including one for Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature. Meanwhile, The Lord of the Rings: Power Rings of the Episodic topped the series with three awards, including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photorealistic Scene. Thirteen Lives is credited with supporting the images with photorealistic features.
Throughout the evening, several of the film's visual effects artists accepted awards for The Way of Water, thanking Cameron and producer John Landau.
Cameron took the stage to present the VES Lifetime Achievement Award to legendary director (and ex-wife) Gail Ann Hurd, whose producing credits include The Terminator (which she also wrote), Aliens and The Abyss . Calling Heard "my friend, mentor and my first producer," Cameron said, "She empowered everyone in her field to achieve more than they could ever imagine." I see her rise to become one of the most powerful producers. And influential women in an industry that is unfortunately still dominated by men.
Since starting her career, she added, "she has done films with these strong female heroes, which was unheard of when she was starting out in the early '80s."
To applause, Hurd spoke fondly of his time working with Cameron, joking that his job was to control the budget, "and believe it or not, I did." He spoke of his love for science fiction and the opportunity for VFX; "My first VFX hero I fell in love with," stop-motion animation pioneer Ray Harryhausen; And finish by telling the audience the VFX experts: "I'm in awe of the magic you create... You're my hero."
Also at the ceremony, the institute's current and former presidents, including current president Lisa Cook, presented the VS Board of Directors Award to former CEO Eric Roth, who will retire in 2022 after 19 years with the institute. "You are part of an organization where volunteers do extraordinary things in extraordinary ways," Roth thanked the participants.
Then it comes down to the business stuff: VFX artists still work long hours and don't always get the services they need. "You can't be a model to bring out the best in such a talented artist," he said. For those who don't understand. They are not faceless physicians. You are your greatest asset."
