Suffice it to say that Avatar: The Way of Water caught the eye of the Visual Effects Society. The sequel to the James Cameron hit received a record 14 nominations for the 2023 VES Awards, announced today.
Backed by three nominations in the Emerging Technology category, Disney 's The Way of Water The Mandalorian surpasses Disney+'s one-year nominations record in 2021 . Avatar, which received eleven nominations in 2010.
The hardware will be on display during the 21st annual VES Awards on Wednesday, February 15 at the Beverly Hilton.
Avatar: The Way of Water will compete for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photorealistic Motion Picture, the closest category to winning a visual effects Oscar, against Fantastic Beasts: Mystery of Dumbledore, Jurassic World: Dominion, The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick . the movies just after the Avatar sequels on our list of top money makers of 2022. Dominion was third on this list.
The six films nominated for best supporting visual effects in a photorealistic film are Death on the Nile, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, The Fablemans, The Gray Man, The Pale Blue Eye and Thirteen Lives . The race for best visual effects in an animated film is between Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Mad God, Strange World, The Bad Guys, The Sea Beast and Turning Red.

The Visual Effects Society's annual awards recognize the year's best for outstanding artistry and innovation in visual effects in motion pictures, animation, television, advertising and video games. The group announced this month that Gale Anne Hurd is running for a VES Lifetime Achievement Award and Eric Roth, a 19-year former CEO, will accept the 2023 VES Board of Directors Award.
Dune and Charm dominated last year's VES Awards with four wins each, and then won Visual Effects and Animated Feature, respectively, at the 94th Academy Awards.
