The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is paying more attention than usual to the movies you're actually paying to see in 2022, and some are nominated for its top honors.
Surprise hit Everything, Everywhere, Simultaneously topped the chart with 11 nominations, but recognition for military and military-related films was impressive. "Top Gun. Maverick," "All Quiet on the Western Front," and "Elvis" will all be part of the ceremony on Sunday, March 12, 2023.
Here's a rundown of the nominees for war films.
Best Weapon: Solitaire:
6 nominations: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing
Tom Cruise did not receive a nomination for Third Best Actor, but was nominated for Best Picture alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, Christopher McQuarrie and David Ellison. McQuarrie, who previously won an Academy Award for his original screenplay for The Usual Suspects in 1996, shares the Best Adapted Screenplay nomination with Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, Peter Craig and Justin Marks.
Lady Gaga, who won an Oscar for writing "Shallow" from 2018's A Star Is Born, and BloodPop shared the Best Song nomination for "Hold My Hand." There were technical nominations for Best Sound, Best Visual Effects and Best Editing, but Claudio Miranda was snubbed for Best Cinematography. Given the amount of new camera tech created specifically for this film, it looks like Maverick will be nominated for (and win) in that category.

Nothing new in the West
9 nominations: Best Film, Best International Feature, Best Sound, Best Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
This German film reinterprets the WWII classic that won the 1931 Oscars for best film and best director. Based on the 1929 novel by German WWII veteran Erich Maria Remarque, the original film featured a soldier fighting in a field. perspective and impressively depicts the extravagance of life represented by war.

Silence on the Western Front 2022 is the first German-language film based on the novel and opens the story to show the soldiers' experiences in the larger context of the war. Richard "Mac" McKinney is a Marine Corps veteran who developed a hatred of Muslims while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Eight months after his first visit in 2009, McKinney converted to Islam and has spent more than a decade telling his story. Director Joshua Seftel made the 30-minute documentary as part of the Secret Lives of Muslims short film series.

Avatar: Waterway

Sounds like a war movie, right? Aside from our own Marine, paraplegic Jake Sully, who left his human body to join the Marines in late 2009, James Cameron's films were considered some Best Picture winners before their release. he was upset with his ex Kathryn Bigelow's Iraqi film The Hurt Locker. Bigelow also beat out Cameron for Best Director.

What happens when a military government commits crimes against its citizens? Americans have never asked this question, but prosecutors in Argentina have since the fall of the military dictatorship in 1983.
The drama, which won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, follows the 1985 trials of the junta seeking to try the military for war crimes, including kidnappings, torture, enforced disappearances and murders. Even as the military junta collapsed, many Argentines did not want the prosecutions to continue and lawyers were threatened during the trials.
