The trailer for Beau Is Afraid of Ari Aster proves that classic movies can really touch on the scariest of subjects. Frightened Handsome , the third feature from Ari Astaire, one of the most exciting horror directors in recent years, following 2018's Hereditary and 2019's Midsommar , leaked online in November 2011 and quickly went viral thanks to its shocking ending that breaks taboos. . Every feature film Astaire has directed since then has touched on the haunting imagery and themes the director explored in his 2011 short.

The trailer for his new film , Bow Afraid, shows that there are no signs of Astaire ending his streak of truly disturbing horror films. Starting with a story called Disappointment Blvd. , which circulated online in 2014, Beau Afraid promises to be Astaire's weirdest movie yet.

Along with Joaquin Phoenix, Bo Freud will follow Bo (Joaquin Phoenix) as he embarks on a true journey fraught with constant danger to return to his domineering mother. However, the film's weirder elements are reminiscent of another classic of the genre: Peter Weir's existential comedy-drama The Truman Show .

Because He's Afraid Trailer Gives Clues About Truman Show Parallels

The Beau Is Afraid trailer matches some of the more surreal meta-elements of The Truman Show . As part of his journey, Bo steers a boat through an eerily calm sea. Looking up, he saw a lighting fixture, presumably for the movie he was shooting, attached to the ceiling of the dome. This moment seems to be a dead giveaway for The Truman Show to end, as Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) moves around the edges of the set where he spent his entire life on a 24-hour reality show. Movies 24 and 7 days a week.

The Beau Is Afraid trailer also includes moments that deliberately destroy any notion of realism in the film. Bo travels through landscapes that are deliberately landscape-like, with painted backgrounds, animated sandstorms, and cardboard cut-out houses. Beau Afraid expands on the simulated reality theme of The Truman Show's luxurious spa setting, making Beau's journey seem as contrived as possible. Astaire also seems to emphasize the horrors of Bo's voyage in contrast to the liberating nature of Truman's escape from the boat, as Phoenix's character appears to be too afraid to leave the supposedly safe environment.

Why The Truman Show Is The Perfect Place For A Horror Movie

The haunting horror Beau Afraid seems to loosely adapt The Truman Show 's premise about a man who loses control of his own life and views it through the prism of horrors. It's a brilliant creative move, as it not only disproves claims that Beau was afraid of being a con man, but also takes The Truman Show premise in a crazy new direction that's perfect for it. The Truman Show included themes that needed to be explored in the context of the horror genre, such as constant surveillance and existentialism, which Beau feared he could take full advantage of.

Truman's lack of power over his own life, with every detail carefully controlled by series creator Christophe (Ed Harris), creates the perfect premise for the horror genre. Kyle Edward Ball's experimental supernatural film Skinamarink also expands on this theme of control when it opens in January 2023, with the premise of two innocent children trapped in their own home on the whim of a stranger. The trailer for Beau Is Afraid supports the idea that it addresses this issue as well, cleverly adapting The Truman Show's basic premise with a touch of horror.
